Migration to Public Cloud – Responsibilities of you and your cloud provider

Myth

When I migrate to Hyperscale Public Cloud Services like Amazon AWS, Microsft Azure and Google Cloud, they look after everything for us and we dont need to worry about Data Security and Identity Management, Data Backups, or Access.

Myth Bust

Each Public Cloud Provider has a ‘shared responsibility model’. This simply means that they look after some areas of the environment (typically the physical hardware components and the security of physical site access), and you look after the data, access and identity control and devices. Applications, OS and Network Management vary depending on the specifics.

Whilst there is no template answer for who looks after what in all scenarios, we have put an example below to give the general flavour of each model.

In addition to the responsibilities of you and your Public Cloud provider, it is also important to consider other areas for example; security of data-flow between your infrastructure and the Cloud provider. The key is not to assume anything and not to take anything for granted. Always do your due diligence, and if at all concerned, get some help from a specialist Cloud Consultancy.
